AT&T’s iPhone champion joins Synchronoss as CEO

Glenn Lurie, who 10 years ago gave AT&T iPhone exclusivity, becomes CEO of Synchronoss

The executive who brought the iPhone to AT&T has become CEO of cloud and messaging company Synchronoss.

Glenn Lurie left AT&T, where he was CEO of AT&T Mobility, in September and has replaced founder Stephen Waldis as CEO, though Waldis remains as board chairman.

“I believe this is a solid inflection point for the company, and I am privileged to lead the resurgence,” said Lurie.

He led AT&T’s pioneering deal with Apple for the launch of the first iPhone in September 2007. AT&T was for a long time the only US operator to sell the iPhone, and Lurie took other new devices on to the network, including the Kindle and the iPad.

“The iPad is part of my responsibility. We see limitless potential,” he told Global Telecoms Business in early 2011, just over three years after the launch, when he was the company’s president of emerging devices.

Synchronoss said that under the new leadership it will focus on its core business as a provider of technology products – including personal cloud services and device and service activation products – to help mobile and fixed operators deliver on their digital transformation strategies.

Synchronoss’s operator customers include América Móvil, AT&T, BT, Reliance Jio, SingTel, Telefónica and Verizon. The company provided the device activation software for the iPhone when it launched on the AT&T network.

Waldis said: “Glenn’s knowledge of the wireless and media space, broad industry relationships and operational acumen are second to none, and make him the ideal leader to drive the next chapter of success for Synchronoss.”
