América Móvil and Telefónica pay $66m in one-day auction for more 4G spectrum in Uruguay

A spectrum auction in Uruguay has concluded after just three stages with the only two bidders, América Móvil and Telefónica, winning additional 4G spectrum for a total of $66.1 million.

The regulator, Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Comunicaciones (Ursec), held just three stages in the auction – but the bid prices did not change between the end of the fourth round in stage one and the conclusion of the auction, with the third round of stage three. All stages in the auction were held on 14 August.

América Móvil, which operates as Claro, bid $10.1 million for each of two blocks of spectrum, in the 700MHz band, plus $7.5 million for another two blocks, in the 1.7/2.1GHz band – a total of $35.2 million, according to Ursec.

Each block is for 2×5MHz and the licences are for 20 years.

Telefónica, operating as Movistar, successfully won three blocks, all in the 700MHz band, paying $10 million for each of two and $10.9 million for a third – a total of $30.9 million.

There were no bids for three further blocks in the 1.7/2.1GHz band.
