BT launches free digital services in new London roll out
BT, Intersection, LinkNYC and Primesight develop new digital units for high street deployment.
With speeds of up to 1Gbps, Londoners across the capital will now have access to free WI-FI, free phone calls and a number of other digital services thanks to an new innovation by BT.
The project is a partnership between BT, Intersection, LinkNYC and Primesight and the new units called InLinks have already begun appearing on Camden High Street. They are set replace many of BT’s existing payphones and plans are already set for the InLinks to reach other highstreets and major cities in the UK throughout the year.
“This is the phone box of the future. InLinkUK from BT brings the payphone up-to-date and gives people the services they need and use every day in the 21st century - and the bonus is it’s all for free, “said Gerry McQuade, CEO of BT wholesale and ventures.
Services available using the InLinks include: free UK landline and mobile phone calls, mobile device charging, access to maps, directions and local services, and a new BT phone book app which allows users to search for businesses by type and name, as well as people by name.
The digital displays in the InLinks units will feature real time information, such as tube service updates, weather forecasts, and community messaging.
All of the InLink services are free to use as the project is funded by advertising revenue generated by the InLinks’ digital displays.
“But as well as the free services - ultrafast Wi-Fi, phone calls, rapid mobile charging and local information – councils and community organisations will be able to use the screens to provide up-to-the minute news and information to local residents. And just as the phone box has evolved, the new InLinks could evolve to use the internet of things, with connected sensors to monitor and help us understand and improve our environment,” added McQuade.
