Belgian cable company completes €400m takeover of Altice operations

Belgian cable operator Telenet has completed the €400 million purchase of Altice’s cable businesses in Belgium and Luxembourg.

The agreement, announced in December 2016, gives Telenet access to 90,000 customers in Belgium and 15,000 in Luxembourg. It is the second big deal in two years for Telenet, which in 2015 bought KPN’s Belgian mobile business, Base, for €1.325 billion.

The cable acquistions were officially called Coditel. Altice bought them in 2003 and in 2008 renamed them Numericable, then the name of the French cable operation, and then again to SFR, to reflect Altice’s 2016 rebranding strategy after it bought the French mobile business.

Earlier this year Telenet disposed of its low-cost Belgian mobile brand Ortel to Lycamobile, which will operate it as a mobile virtual operator using Telenet’s infrastructure.
