Verizon launches LTE Advanced in 461 US cities
Multi-channel technology uses carrier aggregation to offer 4G speeds up to 50% faster
Verizon has launched its LTE Advanced technology, offering 50% faster wireless speeds in more than 461 cities across the US.
The multi-channel technology uses carrier aggregation combining 700MHz, AWS and PCS spectrum to offer possible speeds of more than 300Mbps, according to Verizon’s lab tests.
The carrier claims the LTE Advanced technology will increase peak download speeds in cities nationwide by up to 50% for Verizon customers using one of the 39 LTE Advanced-capable devices available from the company.
“Our customers just received a major network enhancement for no additional cost,” said Tami Erwin, head of operations for Verizon’s wireless unit. “Verizon LTE Advanced works like a turbocharger on an engine. Speed boosts kick in when you need it most, with big data use. That’s when you get the big peak boost of Verizon LTE Advanced.”
LTE Advanced uses a combination of two and three bandwidths, known as carrier aggregation, with speeds exceeding current wireless data connections of between 5-12Mbps. Two-channel carrier aggregation can offer speeds of up to 225Mbps while three-carrier aggregation, which uses three types of spectrum, has hit speeds of up to 300Mbps in Verizon tests.
Verizon launched 4G in 2010, becoming the first carrier to launch LTE across the US.
“With Verizon LTE Advanced, we’re bringing the next generation of wireless technology to the market, coast to coast,” Palmer added. “We’re already in 461 markets and we’re already underway deploying three-channel carrier aggregation.”
